Purpose and Focus

The Division of Educational Outreach mission is to work with deans and faculty across campus to shape university outreach to government, business industry, and the general public by offering high-quality credit and noncredit program offerings.

Some programs serve practicing professionals with a comprehensive series of courses leading to certificates, as well as continuing-education courses, seminars, and workshops to maintain up-to-date skills and certification currency. Others serve the wider community with general interest; recreational; fitness and leisure courses; and activities for youth, adults, and seniors.

Additionally, the division provides administrative oversight and support for summer term, for the Office of Distance Education, and for developing academic credit programs serving special or emerging academic disciplines and special publics. Currently, the division provides support for the Cannon Survey Center and Army Military Science unit on campus. The division also provides administrative support for classes held at Nellis Air Force Base.

Academic Programs Administered by the College

Osher Life Long Learning Institute

A program of self-directed study of topics of interest to institute members. Admission to the college or to UNLV is not required. The program is for retired and semi-retired persons who are intellectually active. For more information, call the coordinator of programs for older students in the Division of Educational Outreach at 702-895-4469.

Senior Citizens Program

UNLV offers courses tuition-free during the fall and spring semesters on a space-available basis to all Nevada residents 62 years of age or older. Senior citizens may attend summer term courses and pay 50 percent of the regular per-credit-hour fees. In all cases, students pay for books, other course-related material, and special fees such as lab fees. For more information, call the coordinator of programs for older students in the Division of Educational Outreach at 702-895-4469.

Nellis Air Force Base Program

UNLV offers courses at Nellis Air Force Base. The primary purpose is to serve the base personnel. Courses are open to the general public. For more information call the program coordinator at 702-652-9411.

Summer Term

Three thousand courses, 1,500 instructors, and 16,000 students make the summer program an integral part of learning at UNLV. Summer term runs for 13 weeks, starting with a three-week session and followed by two five-week sessions. Summer courses have the same academic content as the fall or spring courses, but move at a much faster pace. Many students enjoy limiting their attention to one or two topics and find that attending classes five days a week encourages them to concentrate on the subject material. For more information, visit summerterm.unlv.edu or call the Summer Term office at 702-895-3711.

Distance Education

Distance Education provides learning opportunities that are less restricted by time and place than UNLV courses scheduled on campus. Students may work toward a college degree, enhance their professional standing, or enrich their understanding of the world. All DE courses are taught over the Internet with interactive materials and streaming video. UNLV faculty, supported by instructional designers, programmers, and technicians, create engaging learning experiences in which students may interact any time their lives allow. For more information, call 702-895-0334.

Admission Policies

The requirements for admission to the Academic Credit Certificate programs are the same as the requirements for admission to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Additional requirements may be added to gain admission to a specific program.

Non-credit and Professional Certificate Programs

The Professional Development Center offers non-credit certificates in many areas including human resource management, public relations, paralegal, customer service, systems engineering, waste water education training, child care, non-profit management, payroll administration, medical office procedures, and other areas. Call the Professional Development Center at 702-895-1020 for more information.
